We look forward to working in collaboration with all stakeholders across our region, to find innovative solutions and to provide much improved infrastructure that will benefit our whole community.

Jo Walker,

Chief Executive

The Council

We are a unitary authority, which means we are responsible for all the local government services. We have a vision of an open, fairer, greener North Somerset.

As a unitary authority we carry out a range of activities including those delivered by district and county councils in other areas, such as transportation, recycling and waste, highways, environmental protection, planning, libraries, social services and housing.

To run these front-line services effectively we employ around 1,500 staff, who are working from home, our two main hub buildings in Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare or other sites across the area. We carry out a wide variety of job roles including engineers, project managers, planners, accountants, solicitors, business analysts and graphic designers – all of whom are professionals in their field.

We need a workforce which reflects the community we serve to make sure we provide appropriate services to all our diverse communities. The services we provide have an impact on every resident and business in the area, not just today but in the future too.

We are committed to making sure we give equal opportunities to everyone in our employment and work hard to make sure we do not unfairly discriminate against any job applicant or employee for any reason. We want our work environment to be free from harassment and bullying, where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

We will use positive action to put right past inequalities in the workplace. Examples of this include our Disability Confident Leader status and Apprenticeship Development Programme.

Who we are

The Council has committed to carbon-neutrality by 2030. This is extremely challenging, with transport being North Somerset’s largest emissions sector. It requires transformational change in individual behaviours, scheme delivery and transport planning actions, which highways and transport officers need to lead. Meeting the challenge requires a 17% year on year reduction in car use and development of the full range of demand management tools.

The Corporate plan with its vision of ‘Open, Fair and Green’ at its heart is shaping all our key strategies.

To enable us to bring forward these goals we have secured an indicative funding settlement of £105m with the West of England Combined Authority for our Joint Bus Service Improvement Plan.

This settlement is a phenomenal achievement for North Somerset and has the potential to transform public transport and deliver the most significant change to the public transport system in the Bristol City Region for a generation.

Delivery of both capital and revenue elements of BSIP is absolutely crucial to underpin the council’s ambitions to deliver a significant impact on transport decarbonisation, reallocation of road space, improving public and sustainable transport and making a leap forward in the pursuit of carbon neutrality. For these reasons, BSIP is a significant council and regional leadership priority for the coming years.

We are now scaling up to govern and deliver the programme and are looking for committed, skilled officers to join our team.

We offer a comprehensive training programme for staff, including mandatory training for everyone.

Environment

With so much rural landscape and coastline to protect, we’re fully on board with our commitment to the Climate Emergency and have committed to become carbon-neutral by 2030. We’re the best performing authority in the Southwest for our recycling rates and have big plans to change the way we think about waste and its impact on the environment.

Transport

Whether you crave the hustle and bustle of the city or the quiet charm of the countryside, you can reach either in less than 60 minutes. You can be in London in a little over two hours on the mainline railway, or any destination in the world via Bristol International Airport, which you will find in North Somerset. There are excellent road links too, with the M5 running the length of North Somerset. But if you’re traveling more locally, we’re all about sustainable travel and have committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, which means we’re choosing to ‘make walking and cycling the natural choice for a cleaner, healthier and more active North Somerset’.
